How the Flat Hand Hole Lock Works
The EMT Flat Hand Hole Lock replaces a standard access cover with a locking steel cover that helps protect the wiring inside your light pole.
An internal bracket passes through the hand hole opening. Tightening the center bolt draws the bracket against the inside of the pole and holds the cover against the exterior seating surface. The puck lock then conceals the bolt head to restrict unauthorized removal.
The cover must seat flush against the opening’s surrounding surface, with sufficient internal clearance for the mounting bracket.
How to Measure Your Hand Hole Opening
Before ordering, measure the outside edges and the clear space inside your hand hole opening. Record each set of measurements as width × height.
Step 1 — External Dimension (outside the opening)Measure the widest width and tallest height across the outside edges of the hand hole frame.

Step 2 — Internal Dimension (inside the opening): Measure the narrowest clear width and shortest clear height inside the frame. Account for welds, lips, or other obstructions that reduce the available space. The internal mounting bracket must pass through this opening during installation.

Step 3 — Choose Your Size, Match the Shape, and Confirm Fit.
First, use your opening’s outermost width and height to find the matching SKU. The dimensions in the SKU represent the outside dimensions of the hand hole opening.
Next, match your opening’s shape—rectangular or obround—to the product. Confirm the cover has a flat seating surface around the opening.
Once you find the matching size and shape, compare your opening’s internal measurements with the slide-stop dimensions shown in the product gallery graphic. Do not choose a product based on the outside dimensions alone.
Ideally, the slide-stop dimensions should be approximately 1/4″ smaller than the corresponding internal opening dimensions.
- Slide stops too large? EMT will need to modify them to fit your opening.
- Slide stops more than 1/4″ smaller than the opening? EMT will provide spacers to ensure a proper fit.
Rounded or Obround Openings
Width and height alone may not confirm a proper fit because corner shapes can vary. If you are unsure, email photos and measurements to info@endmetaltheft.com before ordering.

Tools Required
- A wrench or socket suitable for the mounting bolt
- Tools needed to remove the existing cover
- Supplied puck lock key
Installation Steps
- Remove the existing cover. Remove the current hand hole cover and its mounting hardware.
- Attach the bracket to the cover. Insert the center bolt through the cover plate and start threading it into the internal bracket. Follow the assembly guide for correct bracket orientation.
- Position the assembly. With the bracket loosely attached, maneuver it through the opening and into the pole.
- Seat and tighten. Hold the cover flush against the exterior seating surface. Tighten until the bracket holds the cover securely. Do not overtighten.
- Secure the puck lock. Fit the puck lock over the bolt head and lock it with the supplied key.
Important Installation Notes
- Confirm fit first. If the cover does not seat flush, stop and contact EMT before tightening.
- Check bracket orientation. The bolt threads into the bracket from the small side. Incorrect assembly can dislodge the threaded fitting. Follow the installation diagram.
- Flat seating surface required. If the surface around the opening is curved, contact EMT to confirm the appropriate product.
- Check keyed-alike orders. Confirm the intended keys operate all locks before deploying them across your site.
